And immediately the boy’s father cried out and said with tears, “I believe, Lord. help my unbelief.”
This is one of the most honest prayers in the Gospel. The father does not pretend to have perfect faith, but reveals the true condition of his heart. At the same time he believes and feels the weakness of his faith. This confession is a sign of a sincere soul. Before Christ he does not hide the contradiction within him, but turns it into prayer. The phrase “Help my unbelief” shows that even the ability to believe must be asked from God. True faith within a person is often mixed with weakness, but if he brings that weakness before the Lord, it becomes the beginning of healing. This prayer is fitting for all who want to believe with their whole heart, yet feel deep-rooted doubts within themselves.
