And He asked them, “What were you arguing about with them?”
The Lord does not immediately begin to work a miracle, but first reveals the nature of the problem. His question is not from a need to obtain information, but in order to bring the truth out. He wants those present to see what the dispute is about and where human inability lies. Christ often first uncovers the true picture of the heart and of the situation, and only then gives the solution. In this question there is also a rebuke of fruitless disputes. Where compassion, faith, and prayer are required, people often fall into empty arguments. The presence of Christ always redirects attention from what is secondary to what is essential.
