He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven.”
Christ’s question does not arise from ignorance, but has an instructive purpose. He directs the disciples’ attention to what they have, so that they may recognize their limited resources and be ready to place them in His hands. By human reckoning the seven loaves were insufficient, yet in the Lord’s hand that smallness becomes a means of blessing. This episode shows that God acts not under conditions of outward abundance, but when a person has only scant means, and thus it becomes evident that the power is from Him. For the disciples this was also a lesson in humility: to accept their limited resources and, with trust, entrust them to Christ.
