For whoever is ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father and of the holy angels.”
The final verse of this chapter brings the whole teaching to the perspective of judgment and glory. Christ knows that following Him in this world is often connected with shame, rejection, and opposition. With the phrase “in this adulterous and sinful generation,” He describes a world that is unfaithful to God and resists the truth. In such an environment, being ashamed of Jesus and His words means choosing people’s acceptance over God’s approval. But present shame has a future consequence. If a person now rejects Christ in his testimony, on that day when the Son of Man comes with the Father’s glory and with the holy angels, that rejection and everything else will be exposed before judgment. This word is a serious warning for those who seek the world’s approval, and at the same time it strengthens the faithful. It reminds us that present dishonor is temporary, but Christ’s glorious coming is certain. Therefore the believer is called to walk faithfully in the path of the Gospel’s truth, because he serves the Lord, who will one day come in revealed glory.
