“My heart aches for this people, because here they have been with Me for three days and have nothing to eat.
These words reveal the compassion of Jesus’ heart. He does not merely say that the people are hungry, but says, “My heart aches.” That is, their condition does not remain in His mind as information, but enters His heart as pain. This is important, because the Lord’s miracles are never merely a display of power; they flow from love. The fact that the people remained with Him for three days shows their longing to hear the word of truth, and at the same time shows how bodily concerns had been forgotten in the presence of God. But Christ does not want their spiritual zeal to become the cause of physical loss. He sees what they perhaps no longer notice. In these words there is also comfort for the believer: when a person remains with Christ even at the cost of deprivation, the Lord notices that faithfulness and, in His mercy, cares for him.
