They answered and said, “Some say John the Baptist. others say Elijah. and still others, one of the prophets.”
These answers show that the people held Jesus in high regard, but still did not recognize His true identity. To consider Him John, Elijah, or one of the prophets meant acknowledging His uniqueness, yet rejecting or failing to see His messianic and divine singularity. This is an important lesson: it is possible to speak very honorable words about Christ and yet not arrive at the truth. People’s opinions often revolve around lofty ideas, but remain within the limits of human thinking. They placed Jesus among the great figures of the past, while He was their Lord. This verse also reveals that human reason, without divine illumination, can reach only approximate assessments. True knowledge of Christ is not born merely from observation or comparison, but from revelation given from heaven.
