Mark 8:21

And He said to them, “Then how do you not understand?”

This short question is the concluding emphasis of the previous words, directed to the disciples’ heart. Christ does not rebuke them for a lack of knowledge, but asks how it is possible that after all this they still do not understand. This shows that spiritual understanding does not grow only from accumulating information, but through the heart’s obedience and the remembrance of God’s works. Understanding is God’s gift, but it is given to those who receive His word and deeds with seriousness. This question also reminds us that a person can see the Lord’s care many times and yet doubt again. Therefore it is a call to reexamine one’s thinking, to lift one’s gaze above material difficulties, and to fix it on Christ, who has already shown His care and power many times. In truth, the problem was not the lack of bread, but not yet fully knowing the person of Christ; when a person knows Him deeply, many questions find their answer in themselves.
