“And when the four thousand were fed with seven loaves, how many baskets full of pieces did you gather up?” They answered, “Seven.”
This second reminder makes the continuity of Christ’s work clearer. If the first miracle could have been perceived as an exceptional case, the second shows that His power and care are constant. The leftovers of the seven baskets also testify that in His hand, lack is turned into abundance. Therefore the disciples’ concern about bread was unfounded. Christ teaches them that one experience can inspire temporary confidence, but repeated experiences should confirm confidence. A person often seeks new proofs, while the testimonies already possessed are sufficient to walk by faith. This verse calls us not only to count needs, but to remember God’s works, because the more living that memory is, the less room remains for unbelief and the turmoil of the heart.
