Do you have eyes and not see, do you have ears and not hear, and still do you not understand? Do you not remember,
These words recall the prophetic rebukes concerning Israel and show that outward abilities in themselves are not sufficient for spiritual understanding. A person can see the miracle and not recognize its source, hear the truth and not receive it in the heart. Remembering is also mentioned here, because in spiritual life memory has a great role. Faith is often strengthened precisely by recalling God’s former works. When a person forgets the Lord’s mercies, he easily falls into new anxiety and into darkness. This verse teaches that spiritual blindness and deafness did not threaten only the Pharisees, but even the disciples. A person’s eye is opened not only by seeing a miracle, but also by spiritual remembrance of Who worked that miracle.
