And He sighed deeply from the depths of His soul and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation.”
Christ’s deep sigh shows how painful people’s unbelief and the hardness of their heart are to God. This is not an ordinary expression of anger, but sorrow of heart, because people had shut themselves off from the truth so much that even in the presence of light they remained blind. The expression “this generation” refers not only to a historical group, but to that spiritual condition which continually demands a miracle without repentance and obedience. Not giving a sign means that God does not serve the arrogant demands of an unbelieving heart. When the light that has been given is rejected, a person is not worthy of new light. In this word there is judgment, but also justice: they had already seen enough to believe. This verse reminds us that faith is nourished not by an endless chain of proofs, but by a humble attitude toward the truth. Whoever loves God will come from a small light to the greater, but whoever resists will remain blind even in great light.
