He cried out with a loud voice and said, “What is there between me and You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure You by God, do not torment me,”
In these words the demons’ knowledge and terror are concentrated. They call Jesus “Son of the Most High God.” That is, they speak more accurately about the person of Christ than many people who looked at Him only outwardly. Yet their knowledge is not saving faith. The apostle James also says that the demons believe and tremble (James 2:19). They know who He is, but they do not love Him and do not submit in faith. The words “Do not torment me” reveal that Christ’s presence is already torment for the darkness. His holiness, light, and authority involuntarily judge evil even before the final judgment. Commentators also see here the truth that evil always senses its end in the presence of the Son of God. Christ’s coming is salvation for man, but it is the beginning of judgment for the evil powers.
