Jesus strictly commanded them that no one should know about this, and said that they should give her something to eat.
Christ often commanded, after a miracle, that people should not speak about it in immediate excitement. He did not want His ministry to become merely an emotional movement centered on miracles. He also acted in accordance with the order of divine timing and did not want His works to be quickly spread by people’s curiosity. If those reports were to spread at once, it could produce shallow expectations among people and hinder them from reaching a true understanding of His person and mission. His purpose was deeper: to bring people to true faith, so that they would know Him not only through miracles, but in His very essence. At the same time, He commands that the girl be given something to eat. This detail is especially significant. It shows not only the reality of the miracle—because the girl who has been raised returns to the course of ordinary life and has bodily needs—but also Christ’s tender care even for the smallest details. He who has just raised her from death, with the same love also cares for the girl’s everyday need. Thus, as this chapter comes to an end, it is seen in general that in Jesus are united the power of God, His wise governance, and loving care. He is the Lord of the greatest miracles and at the same time the caring Savior, who does not overlook even the most ordinary demands of life.
