Jesus, taking the girl by the hand, said to her, “Talitha, koumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up.”
Christ takes the girl by the hand, showing a tender and merciful attitude, yet immediately addresses her with an authoritative word: “Little girl, I say to you, get up.” He speaks to the girl as to a living person, showing that for Him death is not a final state, but is subject to His authority. His word is life-giving and effective: it is not only a command, but also the power by which the command is carried out. Just as in the beginning God gave life to the world by His word, so here Christ by His word returns life to the dead girl. This episode reveals that He is the Lord of life, and death cannot resist His word.
