People mock Jesus because His word seemed unbelievable and absurd in their eyes. They were convinced of the finality of death and could not accept that He could overcome it. This mockery reveals the blindness of unbelief: when a person judges only on the basis of what he has seen, the divine word becomes unacceptable to him and even laughable. But the Lord puts out that noisy and unbelieving atmosphere and keeps near Him only the child’s father, mother, and those who were with Him. In this way He prepares the place where the miracle is to be done, far from mockery and unbelief. Commentators note that Christ does not act to satisfy people’s curiosity, but carries out His works quietly and in an orderly manner, in an atmosphere of faith. This episode shows that God’s work is often done where there is faith and readiness to receive His power, not where noise and mockery rule.
