This verse highlights the horror of that man’s condition and the complete powerlessness of human means. People had tried to bind him with chains, that is, to use everything they had at hand in order at least to restrain his outbursts. But no one was able to keep him. This shows the superiority of demonic power over ordinary human control. External restraints were not able to change his inner slavery. In the same way, a person who is under the deep dominion of sin and evil often cannot be changed by law alone, by threats, or by social pressure. They can bind him, but they cannot set him free. They can restrain the expressions, but they cannot heal the root. Here the Gospel makes it clear that a person’s deepest wound requires not merely restraint, but liberation, and not discipline, but renewal.
