She had suffered much at the hands of many doctors, had spent all she had, and had seen no benefit, but rather had become even worse.
This verse describes the full weight of the woman’s condition—physically, materially, and psychologically. She had suffered for a long time, had gone to many doctors, and had endured great hardship at their hands; yet not only was she not healed, she became worse. She had also spent all she had, without receiving any benefit. In this way the limitation of human means is revealed, when they are unable to give real help. The Gospel here does not reject medicine, but shows that there are situations in which a person, having exhausted every possibility, remains completely helpless. That woman’s condition prepares her to turn to Christ as the only true and effective physician.
