and now, one of the synagogue rulers came, whose name was Jairus, and when he saw Him, he fell at His feet.
Here we see a man who had honor and standing in society. He was one of the rulers of the synagogue. Yet greatness, honor, and status had not freed him from personal sorrow. As we will see next, pain had entered his home as well. He comes to Jesus and falls at His feet. This is a beautiful example of humility. When a person is in real need and sees his powerlessness, worldly honor loses its value, and he humbles himself before the Lord. This scene shows how even people of high position are compelled to acknowledge Christ’s authority when earthly means are exhausted. It reminds us that a person’s true worth is not determined by his position or honor, but by whether he humbles himself before Christ, regardless of his condition.
