And they came to Jesus Christ and saw the demon-possessed man, who had had the legion, sitting clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid.
This verse presents the wonderful picture of a restored man. He who once was crying out among the tombs is now sitting. He who was in nakedness and shame is now clothed. He who was uncontrollable and savage is now in his right mind. These three signs—peace, covering, and a sound mind—show how complete Christ’s deliverance was. This transformation is one of the greatest examples of grace. Salvation is not only about the forgiveness of sins, but also about the restoration of a person’s wholeness. Yet the people were afraid. They could not immediately rejoice for the man who had been set free, because this powerful work of God disturbed them. Many times a person is more accustomed to the presence of evil than to the holy power of God. Often, when true holiness appears, he becomes confused.
