Christ turns His gaze toward those who were sitting around Him and were listening, following, and receiving His word. This look in itself is very expressive. He recognizes those around Him who are not only physically near, but also open in heart. The words “Here are My mother and My brothers” bestow great honor on believers. Christ not only teaches people or helps them, but also brings them into such closeness with Himself that they become His family. This does not diminish the idea of the natural family, but shows that in the kingdom of God there is a new and deeper kinship. It is founded not on physical birth, but on spiritual rebirth.
