And He answered them, saying, “Who is My mother, or who are My brothers?”
This question does not express contempt toward His mother or His relatives. The whole testimony of the Gospel shows that Christ perfectly honored His mother and all the duties required by the law. Yet here He lifts the listeners’ mind toward a deeper meaning. He asks who His true family is. This is a question that breaks a person’s natural assumptions and opens a new reality. In the kingdom of God, the primary bond is not a bond of blood, but the bond of faith and obedience. This question of the Lord invites everyone to reconsider what true closeness with Christ is.
