This verse completes the list of the Twelve, reminding us of a painful truth. Judas also was chosen by Christ and was among the other disciples, yet later became His betrayer. This shows that an outward calling and being close to Christ still do not guarantee inward faithfulness. A person may hear Jesus’ word and see His works, yet remain far from Him in heart. Judas’ name is mentioned here also as a warning. He did not fall suddenly, but gradually went astray, allowing unbelief and greed to arise in his heart. The story of Judas reminds us that it is not enough only to begin with Christ; it is necessary to remain with Him to the end.
