And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a white garment, and they were terrified.
Inside the tomb the women find not a sorrowful scene of death, but the presence of a heavenly messenger. The white garment is a sign of holiness, heavenly glory, and the light of God. He is seated there where they expected to find the silence of death, and thus the tomb becomes a place of revelation. The women’s terror was natural, because they were standing before an event that surpasses human understanding. God often reveals His great works of salvation in such a way that a person at first trembles and is amazed. But that fear will soon be changed into the joy of good news, because the heavenly message will proclaim not death, but resurrection.
