Mark 16:4

For it was very large, but they looked and saw that the stone had been rolled away from the tomb.

The stone they were worried about had already been rolled away. This is a clear sign of God’s work. The stone was rolled away not so that Christ might come out, because the risen Lord was not confined by the bonds of the tomb, but so that the witnesses might go in and see that the tomb is empty. The phrase “It was very large” emphasizes that by human strength it was difficult to move, but for God no stone is too large. The morning of the resurrection begins with the revelation that God has already acted where the human being is still anxious. This teaches the believer to trust in the Lord’s power, because He can open the door that seems closed to people.
