On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, as the sun was rising, they came to the tomb.
The first day of the week, that is, Sunday morning, became the beginning of the new creation and the new life. Just as in the first creation God brought light into the darkness, so also on this morning, through the resurrection of Christ, a new light of salvation was opened. The women come to the tomb very early, showing their warm love and devotion toward the Lord. The rising of the sun here is not only a marking of time, but also a spiritual image: after the darkness of the cross, the bright morning of the resurrection begins. They were going to the tomb, thinking that they would find a dead body, but God was leading them to the empty tomb and to living hope. So also in the believer’s life, sometimes the greatest light is revealed on the path that at first seems filled with tears, sorrow, and uncertainty.
