The Lord promises signs that were to accompany the spread of the Gospel and confirm the apostles’ testimony. Casting out demons showed Christ’s authority over the powers of darkness, and speaking in new languages showed the Gospel’s spread among different nations and the living work of the Holy Spirit through the church. The center of these signs is the phrase “in My name”: the power is not in a person’s personal ability, but in Christ’s authority and presence. Therefore, the signs must never become a means of self-serving ambition, but must serve the confirmation of the truth of the Gospel. The name of Christ is powerful because the Risen Lord is alive, reigns, and works through His people.
