Mary went and told those who had been with Jesus, while they were mourning and weeping.
Mary becomes the bearer of the good news for those who were still in mourning and tears. The disciples, who had been with Jesus, were now weeping, because the events of the cross had shattered the visible forms of their hope. They still did not understand that death has been defeated. Mary’s testimony shows that God often sends a word of comfort through people whom the world may not consider to have great authority. The news of the resurrection comes precisely where mourning is deepest. The gospel does not ignore weeping, but enters into it and declares that Christ is alive.
