The death of Christ is presented in a majestic and voluntary way. The loud cry shows that He died not in the powerless weakness of defeat, but with the authority of a King who had completed His work. The phrase “gave up His spirit” means that He entrusted His life to the Father. No one, in the ultimate sense, took His life away; He gave it willingly. This death was not an ordinary death, but a perfect sacrifice offered for sin. On the cross the Lamb of God finished the work for which He had come, and by His death opened the way of life.
