They make faith conditional on the sign they want: “let Him come down from the cross, so that we may believe.” But such faith is not true, because it demands that God abandon His saving way. Christ was not to come down from the cross, but to rise from the tomb. That would be the sign established by God. Even those who were crucified were reproaching Him, which shows that the sinful heart can speak with bitterness against Christ even in its own judgment. At the cross everyone is exposed, and it is grace alone that can make the mocker a believer.
