Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” He answered and said to him, “You said it.”
Pilate’s question had a political nature, because the Jewish leaders were presenting Christ as a danger to Roman authority. The title “King of the Jews” was true, but they were using it as an accusation. Christ’s answer confirms the truth, yet rejects the idea of an earthly rebellion. He truly is King, but His kingdom is not from the violent and passing powers of this world. His royal authority was to be revealed not by the sword and political force, but by the humility of the cross, by victory over sin, and by the establishing of the eternal kingdom.
