The phrase “They crucified Him” is brief, yet within it is contained unspeakable suffering and the deepest mystery of salvation. Christ was lifted up on the cross as One bearing a curse, because Scripture says that the one who hangs on a tree is cursed (Deuteronomy 21:23, Galatians 3:13). He became a curse for us, not because of His own sin, but in order to take upon Himself the condemnation of humanity’s sin, and that sinners might receive blessing and freedom through Him. The dividing of His garments and casting lots fulfills the prophetic word that lots would be cast for His clothing (Psalm 22:18). The soldiers acted with ordinary greed, yet unknowingly they were carrying out what is written in Holy Scripture. Near the cross, human cruelty, indifference, and greed are exposed, while Christ’s sacrifice remains at the center of salvation.
