And they brought Him to the place called Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.
Golgotha was a place of death and disgrace. There they were leading Christ, in the eyes of the world, as one condemned. Yet in that very dark place the greatest light of God’s love was to be revealed. The name “Place of a Skull” recalls death, and Christ’s presence there shows that He entered the realm of death in order to conquer death. The cross was set up not inside the temple, but in a place of disgrace, so that it might be made known that the Savior came to reach the person who has fallen into the deepest darkness of sin and death.
