The soldiers led Jesus inside the courtyard, which was the palace courtyard, and called together the whole cohort.
Christ is handed over into the hands of the Roman soldiers, and they gather the whole cohort around Him. This was no longer merely a judicial process, but the preparation for the mockery and dishonor that were beginning. In the courtyard of the palace, the soldiers of worldly authority stand before the Son of God in order to humiliate Him. Yet He who could have called the heavenly armies silently accepts this dishonor. His humility reveals the depth of saving love: Christ enters the lowest places of human humiliation, so that through Him sinners might be raised up and be counted worthy of honor before God.
