Pilate answered them again and said, “Then what do you want me to do with the king of the Jews?”
Pilate’s question reveals his weakness. He knew that Jesus was innocent, yet he still asks the crowd what he should do with Him. Justice could not depend on the crowd’s desire. The question about Christ also stands before every person: what should be done with Jesus? Some try to remain neutral, but there is no neutrality toward Him. Pilate thought he could pass the decision on to others, yet he himself remained responsible for his unjust verdict.
