The phrase “Stay awake” sums up the practical purpose of the whole prophetic teaching. The Lord does not want us to count the times in fear or be led astray by false signs, but to live faithfully before Him. Watchfulness means keeping faith, prayer, love, holiness, and service until the Lord’s return. Thus Mark chapter 13 sets us before two great truths: the world’s glory is passing, but Christ’s word is everlasting, and those who are ready for His coming are those who are awake in faith and obedience.
