Therefore stay awake, because you do not know when the master of the house will come: in the evening, or at midnight, or at the rooster’s crowing, or in the morning.
The Lord again emphasizes the need for constant watchfulness because the time is uncertain. The mention of different hours of the night shows that His coming may be at an hour when people are spiritually weakened or asleep. To remain awake means to live in such a way that the Lord’s coming does not find one in sin, indifference, or neglect of service. Christ does not give the hour so that we would not limit our readiness to one time, but be ready at all times.
