Be watchful, stay awake, and pray, because you do not know when the time is.
Since the day is unknown, the believer’s duty is watchfulness. The words “Be careful” refer to being kept from deception and sin, “Stay awake” refers to spiritual alertness, and the expression “Pray” refers to living in dependence on God. Uncertain time should not produce indifference, but constant readiness. Christian expectation is not passive sitting, but living faithfully before the Lord. Prayer keeps the heart alive, wakefulness keeps the mind sober, and carefulness keeps the path straight.
