Jesus answered him and said, “Do you see all those buildings? Truly I tell you, not one stone will be left here upon another. all of it will be torn down.”
The Lord’s answer was shocking, because He was speaking about that temple which in people’s eyes seemed unshakable. The words “Not one stone will be left upon another” foretold the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple, which took place through the Roman forces. Yet this prophecy was not only a declaration of a historical event; it was also a word of divine judgment against a religion that had kept its outward form but had rejected the Son of God. The temple was a sign of God’s presence, but when the people rejected Him who is greater than the temple, judgment became unavoidable. This word teaches us not to rely on outward religious institutions if the heart is far from the Lord.
