Likewise you also, when you see all these things happening, know that the Son of Man is near, at the doors.
Christ explains the purpose of the signs: they are given not to satisfy curiosity, but to awaken spiritual watchfulness and readiness. The expression “It is near, at the doors” shows nearness and urgency. When speaking about the destruction of Jerusalem, this meant that the disciples, seeing the fulfillment of the signs Christ had foretold, were to understand that God’s judgment was drawing near. Yet this word also has a broader spiritual meaning: the upheavals of the world and the confirmation of Christ’s words remind every generation that the final and glorious coming of the Son of Man is inevitable. Therefore the believer is called to live not with fear or empty calculations, but with watchfulness, faith, and a repentant heart.
