And as Jesus was coming out of the temple, one of His disciples said to Him, “Teacher, look what stones and what buildings they are!”
The disciple’s words show the natural human admiration for outward greatness. The temple of Jerusalem, with its splendor, massive stones, and sacred significance, was for the Jews one of the chief signs of the nation’s glory. Yet Christ had just rebuked religious hypocrisy and had seen the poor widow’s true offering from the heart. This contrast is important: people often marvel at stones, buildings, and visible glory, but God looks at the heart, faith, and fruit. The beauty of the temple was not sin in itself, but it could not cover the people’s spiritual emptiness. When the house of God loses the spirit of obedience, prayer, and holiness, its outward glory cannot protect it from judgment.
