But woe to those who are pregnant and to nursing mothers in those days.
The Lord mentions with tenderness and sorrow those for whom flight would be most difficult. Pregnant women and nursing mothers would be in danger not only because of themselves, but also because of their children. This word shows that Christ’s prophecy is not an insensitive judicial declaration; His heart sees the details of human suffering. The judgment is just, but within it there are real pain, tears, and human vulnerability. The Lord teaches us not to think about judgment with cold curiosity, but with fear, compassion, and repentance.
