The suffering had not affected only David’s body. His soul also was deeply troubled. The question “How long?” is a cry of faith often found in the Psalms. It does not mean that David stopped believing in God. On the contrary, he turns to the Lord precisely because he is convinced that only He can bring the pain to an end. The time of waiting is often heavier than the trial itself. When the answer is delayed, a person can feel forgotten. Yet God’s silence is not indifference. He is at work even when we do not see the result. This verse allows the believer to express his spiritual turmoil honestly, without pretending a false calm. At the same time, the question must remain within prayer and not become a final conclusion of unbelief. We can say “How long?” and continue to wait for the Lord, trusting His wise timing.
