God’s “coming down” is a poetic image that shows how He draws near to His people and intervenes with power in their distress. The Lord is exalted in heaven, yet He is not a distant observer. When David cries out, God’s intervention is portrayed as the bending down of heaven. The “thick darkness” recalls His mysterious and awe-inspiring presence, which a human being cannot fully control or understand. God draws near, yet He continues to remain holy and limitless. For the believer, this is both comfort and reverent fear. The Lord can come down into our deepest distress without losing His greatness. He is with us, but He is not confined within our limits. When God’s ways are not visible and are covered with darkness, it does not mean that He is absent. Sometimes His work is still unseen precisely in the fog. Faith trusts the Lord’s presence even when it does not understand all His steps.
