Then the earth shook and trembled, the foundations of the mountains moved and were shaken, because He was angry.
David describes God’s intervention with vast cosmic imagery. The shaking of the earth and the moving of the foundations of the mountains show that before the Lord’s presence even what seems most stable can tremble. This is poetic language, presenting the greatness of deliverance through images of divine revelation. God’s anger here is His holy opposition to evil, not human, uncontrolled rage. David’s enemies thought they were mighty, yet before God’s intervention all creation seems to be set in motion. For the believer, these words remind us that evil is never greater than God. What seems like an immovable wall to us is not a boundary for Him. At the same time, the Lord’s holiness inspires reverent fear in each of us. His power is not only the means of our protection. He is the holy King, before whom we are all accountable.
