In my distress I called on the Lord and cried out to my God. From His temple He heard my voice, and my cry came before Him, to His ears.
At the center of David’s crisis stands prayer. When the pains and snares of death surrounded him, he called on the Lord. The phrase “He heard from His temple” shows God’s holy and royal presence. He is exalted, yet not distant. David’s cry reaches His ears. This is comfort for every person who thinks that his voice is too weak or his situation too tangled. God’s hearing does not depend on the beauty of the prayer. A sincere cry reaches Him. At the same time, hearing does not mean that the Lord always immediately does what a person wants. He hears and answers with His wisdom and righteousness. The believer can be sure that his prayer does not vanish into emptiness. Distress often reveals that dependence on God which, in times of peace, a person easily forgets.
