He gives great salvation to His king and shows mercy to His anointed, to David and to his offspring forever.
The psalm ends by linking David’s personal deliverance with God’s covenant promise. The Lord shows mercy to His “anointed,” the king whom He Himself had established. The word extends also to David’s offspring and in this way recalls the Davidic covenant, according to which God would continue His royal plan through David’s throne. The final and perfect fulfillment of that promise in the Christian faith is Jesus Christ, the Son of David and the eternal King (Luke 1:32–33). David’s earthly kingdom came to an end, but God’s promise did not pass away. In Christ it reached its full completion. In David’s case, his personal deliverances were also connected with God’s greater covenant plan. For the believer, this is a reminder that God acts not only in individual moments, but is faithful to His promises and plans. He has revealed the fullness of His mercy in Jesus Christ.
