God is the One who takes vengeance for me and brings the peoples into submission under my hand.
David clearly says that just repayment is not his personal revenge. God is the righteous Judge and the One who establishes his royal authority. This distinction is especially important for Christian practice. The New Testament commands believers not to take personal revenge, but to entrust judgment to God (Romans 12:19). In David’s case, the subduing of peoples was connected with his historical mission as king and commander. A Christian cannot use this word to bring others under his own control. Instead, we learn to trust that final justice is in God’s hand. When we are wronged, that trust frees us from the desire for revenge. The Lord can reveal the truth, restrain evil, and in His time carry out righteous judgment. Our calling is faithfulness, prayer, and, when possible, seeking reconciliation.
