Foreigners grew weak and came out trembling from their fortresses.
The fortresses that once seemed secure no longer give David’s opponents confidence. They weaken and come out trembling. This shows how unstable a person’s sense of safety can be when it is built only on walls and strength. The fortress that appeared to be protection cannot stand against the victory God has given. For the believer, this is a reminder not to make outward means the final refuge. A home, work, or financial resources are important gifts, yet none of them is an everlasting fortress. When those supports are shaken, a person’s true refuge is revealed. David had already said at the beginning of the psalm that his true fortress is the Lord. Here that contrast becomes especially clear: human fortresses can lose their strength, but God remains unshakable. Therefore, the believer’s deepest confidence and security must be grounded not in passing means, but in the Lord.
