You girded me with strength for battle and threw those who rose up against me under my feet.
David again reminds us of the true source of victory. God is the One who “girded him with strength” and humbled his opponents before him. This repetition prevents the mistake of thinking that the earlier military descriptions are human self-glorification. His strength was received from God. For the believer, this is an important principle in every success. Ability, opportunity, time, and the outcome are ultimately God’s gifts. We work, prepare, and bear responsibility, yet we cannot grant ourselves all the conditions of life. David’s example teaches us, at the moment of victory, to remember who it was that girded us. That remembrance keeps the heart humble. In spiritual warfare as well, our strength is from the Lord. A Christian cannot finally win victory over sin and temptation by willpower alone. He needs God’s grace, truth, and the power of the Holy Spirit.
