You made my path broad beneath my feet, and my feet did not slip.
Instead of a narrow path and the danger of stumbling, God makes a wide space for David. “Making room for my steps” is an image of moving freely and going forward with firmness. The words “my feet did not stumble” show that God’s help was not only in the final victory, but in the guarding of every step. The believer often notices only the great deliverances and forgets the thousands of small steps in which the Lord keeps him from stumbling. This verse teaches us to be thankful also for that unseen protection. When God gives an opportunity or a “wide place,” it must be used with faithfulness, not with carelessness. Greater freedom brings greater responsibility. The Lord’s grace provides a safe place not only to rest, but also to continue on the right paths.
