He makes my feet like the feet of a deer and sets me standing on high places.
The deer is an image of moving quickly and steadily in difficult mountainous terrain. David says that God gives him balance and a confident step in places where it is naturally easy to stumble. The “high places” can represent military advantage and a position of victory. With spiritual application, the verse shows that the Lord can make His people steady in the midst of hard paths. He does not always level every mountain, but He can give feet for the mountains. This is an important distinction. The believer often asks only for the removal of the trial, while God sometimes gives endurance to pass through it. That steadiness and endurance are not the result of a person’s own ability. David clearly says, “He is the One who makes.” When the believer is able to stand firm where, by his own strength, he would easily stumble, it is a testimony to the Lord’s grace and power.
